I've had reasonable luck doing it through a web browser on the phone. gmail also has an app specifically for using it on mobiles, though who knows if it's compatible with iPhones. It might be easier than trying to work with a new, phone specific email system. That way you'd finally be in the loop for last minute game emails!
I haven't been able to find a Gmail app for the iPhone (there was a Google app but it didn't seem to do it). I've started using the mail program on the phone instead of the gmail link as the mobile version of gmail was only slightly more cooperative.
