Present Face Final from Erika Lindhome on Vimeo.

I only post this one because it shows how hard it is to make something look holiday like in California.

Hands up if you've seen that face on occasion. It hurts.

Holidays are well planned this year, somewhat. I've got a few rollowers from last year that I got because my Christmas vacation got turned into a bereavement period, and I've got march break off (Hey, Ottawans! I'm coming for YOU!). I've got the two days prior to FanExpo off, and I've taken the Monday afterwards, too, so I can just relax. Maybe we'll stay for dinner after show and stay at the hotel an extra night.

I'm still trying to arange for the other few days of the year, and hoping I'll get holidays (Thanksgiving and Victoria day and Canada Day and all the other great holidays they don't celebrate in the Holy Republic).

I may just apply to get the Friday of Toronto Trek off. And maybe the Monday.

Five Questions below here. )

Back to the grindstone tomorrow.

The past couple weeks have been fairly intense, and not quite the relaxing time off we'd been hoping for.

The trip out east for the memorial went well, and gave Cynra some tme with her family.

This weekend was fairly restive, and we got to visit some friends in Kay Dub for Avatar and several games of Race For the Galaxy. It does play a lot faster when everyone knows the rules.

I'm fairly exhausted right now. Hopefully a good night's rest will help put things straight.

In spite of the unpleasantness of yesterday (and the subsequent scrambling; I'd like to offer a nice "fuck you" to the airlines of the world) this morning was very nice. Snow's falling like big fluffy balls of holiday, and the CBC is playing Christmas music.

They just played this tune, in fact.

But I'll get the Killers Christmas single anyway.

This is, as far as I know, the third year in a row that they've released a Christmas special single. The first year was a fairly traditional Christmas tune called "A Great Big Sled", and last year was a strange Tarantino-esque tune called "Don't Shoot Me, Santa", about a Kris Kringle figure who brings more than coal for naughty children.

This year is the strange tune "Joseph, Better You Than Me", which features Neil Tennant and Elton John. It's an interesting tune so far.

I'm only a mild fan of The Killers, but I just remember an old roommate telling about being a member of the fanclub for the Fifth Dimension, and getting a Christmas single every year as part of the membership. That appeals to me, on a certain level.

Oh, man. Bryan Adams AND PeeWee Herman. Throw in some terror about MAD and a couple polyhedrals, and it's my experience of the '80s.

I am a 363 days of the year cook. I cook around teh house for 363 days of the year. The wife takes over for Christmas and Thanskgiving. And possibly Easter on leap years.

I help her when I can, mind you, but she's very possesive of the kitchen when she's in charge.

Speaking of cooking, I did our semi-regular curry last night, and tried something different. Instead of dicing the onion, I grated it instead. I couldn't really tell any difference, other than feeling like I'd just been zapped with the springtime freshness of mace.

I used garlic on the smaller grater instead of using the big jug of pre crushed garlic. It worked out pretty good. Maybe a nice press would do a better job.

Anyone know if grating does a good job or a bad job for prepping garlic and onions? I use them in a lot of dishes, so it's good to know if I'm messing them up entirely.

This will never get old.

And a happy Thanskgiving to our neighbours in the holy republic to the south.

edit: Ah, man, they cut out the punchline! Ah, well, if it's your Thanksgiving you can watch the whole thing on Hulu.

And we hate you for Hulu, you know.

Fairly quiet weekend. We'd planned on going to the Taste! thingy in Picton, but since we weren't going to Mater & Pater's for Thanksgiving, it would have just been a huge drive out for a chocolate fountain and some little snacks.

Hell, we've even been lapse in attending the local farmer's market, so going a couple hundred klicks to see one in another county seems somewhat hypocritical.

Saturday was taken up with... God, I cannot recall for the life of me. Probably tidying up one house part or another. And shopping for TG foodstuffs and getting a wedding present. We wanted to watch Aliens, but on our way to the video store we endedup also getting Hot Fuzz and Superman: Doomsday. We did watch Superman: Doomsday on Saturday.

Sunday was selfsame wedding, [livejournal.com profile] zenten's. Ceremony was held at the same place as the reception, Fantasy Farms in TO. The attending padre was taking his time off from his full time carreer as a Charles Nelson Reilly impersonator.

Dinner was sweet, with grilled foodstuffs (I got a hella-tasty steak) and Anthony, the same guy who'd been bartender at [livejournal.com profile] mr_weasel's reception, was large & in charge. God bless him. One ounce is just a suggestion, when it comes right down to it.

The reception was fun, and I got in my token amount of dancing. It was good to see Ed & Kathy again, as we haven't seen them in forever. I can't even remember the last time we went out for karaoke. [livejournal.com profile] zenten, in a fannish moment, used Sarek's wedding speech.

Yesterday was TG, and the majority of it was spent cleaning up stuff in the office downstairs. Personally, I think we need to go through the spare bedroom next to it first, but golden rule, etc, etc. Uday & his GF came over for dinner, and it went nice. The turkey was tasty, there was an awesome pumpkin pie that was very light, and we watched some Hot Fuzz (it's not totally appropriate TG viewing, but we had to get it back last night).

Bleh. And now I'm back in the trenches.

So we met with the parents and the brothers (and the one brother's GF) for mother's day brunch. I love brunching. And the variety of foodstuffs to eat. I had shrimp and beef and an omlette and sausages and bacon and potatoes and some waffles and salads and cheese and meats.

God bless buffet, is all I gots to say.

And a happy mother's day to all the mothers; to all the women who've loved their children, who've nurtured the children around them, even not their own, who've made decisions hard and easy, even the hardest ones.

While I was visiting [livejournal.com profile] malliabu in the back 40, one of his co-workers started askign questions out of a game called Hump!, which is apparently a sexual trivial pursuit. Anyway, as I was there, one of the questions was "what is plusophilia", which I answered without even getting the multiple choices. Huzzah, me. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] pyat for that aspect of my education.

In addition, I present to you The World's Most Dangerous Toys, which sounds like a Zo game.

The weekend was quiet, mostly. [livejournal.com profile] atomiks came by yesterday to hang for a bit; we ate stroganoff and watched O Brother.

Earlier in the day, Cynra took Khem Khat in for her shots & I took Supercar to get the Winter tires on (the summers are now in the shed, because they were tied up two to a bag and I did NOT want to carry that down the stairs). So, as I was driving home the snowflakes started falling. Beat THAT, mother nature! I gots my snows on!

Today was interesting, as [livejournal.com profile] luciancarter and (and Mitch-who-does-not-have-an-lj) went to see the Blood, Sweat & Ears show at Club 107.

It was an good show. I thought the openning match was particularly good; the competitors were all students from a local wrestling school, and you could tell they were all very comfortable working together.

There were four tag team matches, a woman's division match and three men's. But the highlight of the night was a match between Lance Storm and Christian.

It was particularly awesome for me, as I'd had almost opportunities to see both of them wrestle in the WWE. The Lance Storm bout was fucked up by some stupid angle where Cade got 'injured', but that turned out to be a work, and Christian got to do a Peep Show segment that ended with him getting a beating from the Mexicools. Neither of these really allowed them to highlight their ring skills.

So, when they announced that they'd be wrestling each other at BSE (and is THAT not an unfortunate acronym?) I was in like Flynn. [livejournal.com profile] noizangel couldn't make it because of LARP commitments. More fool she! The match was, if not kick ass, very good. The two of them took a while to get started, with Christian folding his pants and jacket before passing them to the timekeeper. To say the two of them had a hot crowd is to understate the case signficantly. The crowd gave the aforementioned pans folding a "holy shit" chant.

The two of them then did a five second pose-off before the match as well. And the match was sublime. Really, two guys that good in the ring together was worth the $15. Storm can sell an elbow to the head like nobody in the industry. After two unprettiers, Christian won, but I think the audience were the real winners.

So, yeah, good weekend. Short week this week (no maybies this time).

Just a note that, like every other nerd on the planet, I've got an Amazon wish list.

If, you know, we exchange and you're having trouble thinking of anything.

Hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving (even if you managed to miss it by a month again).

The Onion has a nice piece on 17 memorable Thanksgiving TV moments. It's okay, but #17 is dead on.

You wanna know whose fault this is? [livejournal.com profile] papajoemambo's fault, that's who.

I got 35 seconds in before I had to avert my eyes.

The Enchantress had a nice wig, though. Plus: Power Man!

Is that the theme to Amazing Stories?
thebitterguy: (Canada Day)
First off, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kynn for putting together a delightful summary of the past week's rather tepid conflict.

Today was, as it is every year, Canada Day. To celebrate, Cynra and I once again took in the Metro Toronto Zoo. We did a walk around the zoo, taking in many of the wonderful creatures there. The Gorilla exhibit is always nice; the silverback male of the troop would occasionally sprint past the viewing window, smacking into it with his fist, generally scaring the crap out of anyone standing there.

We also went down to the Canadian section, where there was cake and face painting (and a clown). Many of the animals took a chance to nap in the heat. Bears and lions, for sure, we didn't see the bears. By the time we saw the leopards, they'd started to move around.

To cap the day, of course, we each had a beavertail while sitting next to a flock of Canada Geese. If that moment had been any more Canadian, I'd have been given Government weed and gotten a gay marriage, while staying out of the conflict in Iraq.

We got out before the rain started, and now 'm starting the stir fry. HCD for the crew around the world.

If we

You know what I love about this web page? It lists holidays for both Canada & the US. In additon to the normal shiftable holidays (Labour day, Thanksgiving, Victoria Day) it also lists holidays that, well, you don't really need listed, like Christmas and Canada Day.

I mean, sure, it's definitely useful if you're a non-citizen (or even a new citizen) for that, and the list of the maleable days is good, but it's good for a chuckle.

Got home after the climax of the Mage game last night to give Cynra a couple early Christmas presents. Since it was the 25th anniversary of Lennon's shooting last night, I gave her a copy of Working Class Hero and the Time/Life special on his life. She's a fan of his, so she enjoyed that.

For Christmas I've got my eye on a book at [livejournal.com profile] papajoemambo's store. Can't really figure out what else, as she's tough to shop for and never makes a list.
